Don’t Let Insurance Stop You From Great Therapy — Here’s How to Get Reimbursed

So, you’ve found a therapist you really connect with (yay! 🎉), but then you find out… they’re not in-network with your insurance. Womp womp.
But don’t panic — this doesn’t have to be a dealbreaker.
If your insurance plan includes out-of-network benefits, you might be able to get reimbursed for a portion of your therapy costs. That means you get to choose the therapist who feels right for you and get some money back in the process. 🙌
Yes, it takes a little effort upfront — but it can absolutely be worth it.
💡 Why Bother with Out-of-Network Reimbursement?
Before we dive into the steps, here’s why it might be worth the extra few minutes of paperwork:
✨ You don’t have to limit your care to whoever’s “in-network.” You get to work with someone who gets you — which is kind of the whole point of therapy, right?
✨ You can get back 40–80% of what you paid, depending on your plan (once you meet your deductible).
✨ You’re in control of how often and how long you stay in therapy — not a panel or policy.
✨ It adds up! Over time, those reimbursements can significantly reduce your out-of-pocket costs.
✅ Step 1: Call Your Insurance Company
Your first step is to get the details of your specific plan. Call the number on the back of your insurance card and ask:
Do I have out-of-network benefits for mental health?
Do I need to meet a deductible first? If so, how much is it and how much have I already met?
What percentage of each session will be reimbursed?
Is there a limit on the number of sessions per year?
Do I need a referral or pre-authorization?
How do I submit a claim?
📝 Tip: Write down the answers or ask them to send you an email summary — it's helpful to have in writing!
✅ Step 2: Request a Superbill from Me
Once you know your plan covers out-of-network therapy, you’ll need a superbill — basically a detailed receipt you submit to insurance.
I can send you one monthly or after each session, depending on what works best for you.
It includes:
My name, credentials, and license number
Your name and date(s) of service
CPT codes (for the type of session)
A diagnosis code (required by insurance)
The fee paid
My NPI and tax ID
✅ Step 3: Submit the Superbill
Most insurance companies allow you to submit claims:
Through your online member portal
Via a mobile app
Or by mail (sometimes with a claim form)
Each company has their own system, so check the exact steps for yours.
✅ Step 4: Get Reimbursed 💵
After your claim is processed, you’ll get:
A reimbursement check or direct deposit
An Explanation of Benefits (EOB) showing what they covered
📈 Many clients receive 40–80% of their session fee back after meeting their deductible. That’s money in your pocket — and one less barrier to continuing your mental health care.
Final Thoughts: Invest in Yourself — and Get Something Back
Therapy is an investment in your well-being, your relationships, and your ability to show up as your full self. Out-of-network benefits make it possible to:
✨ Work with the therapist who’s the best fit for you✨ Get partially reimbursed for the support you need✨ Keep your mental health a priority without burning out your budget
💬 And if finances are a concern? Just ask. I offer a limited number of sliding scale spots to help make therapy more accessible. I’d be happy to talk with you about what’s possible.
If you're not sure where to start or want help requesting a superbill, just reach out — I’ve got you. 💛
